Broadmeadow is an underground mine with obligations that extend to both surface and underground operations. As the Supervisor Surface Gas Drainage you will report to the Ventilation Superintendent and will take responsibility for all aspects of surface gas drainage system which includes understanding and reducing risk to both surface and underground operations.


About the Role


In this role you will:


  • Plan and predict (in consultation with industry consultants) future specific gas emissions in the underground mine, and recommend gas reduction strategies to reduce gas levels encountered by undergoing operations.
  • Supervise the day-to-day activities of gas field staff engaged in Broadmeadow Mine to satisfy the requirements of the underground mining operations and the requirements of relevant stakeholders.
  • Coordinate all surface gas drainage activities at BMA Broadmeadow Mine and deliver in accordance with associated budget, schedule and resources. This includes operation and commissioning of SIS, UIS, Goaf wells and associated surface infrastructure.
  • Be responsible to ensure that any work including gas drainage activities associated with the underground mine are conducted at an acceptable level or risk. As such, all necessary permitting requirements will need to be completed by you.
  • Review surface gas drainage performance and revise drainage strategy accordingly.
  • Effectively apply risk management tools to identify hazards and controls.
  • Comply with, review and maintain the Safety and Health Management System (SHMS) relevant to the surface gas drainage system.
  • Ensure compliance to Contractor Management Framework (CMF) for direct contract reports.
  • Assist the gas drainage and ventilation team as required.

About You


As the successful candidate will be able demonstrate relevant technical skills applicable to effectively establish and implement a gas drainage management plan. You will have demonstrated leadership skills and experience and experience in working with teams in a coal gas environment.


Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential to allow you to engage with teams and leaders at all levels of the organisation. Your interpersonal skills allow you to build relationships within your teams, and across departments. You are able to take accountability for, and manage, all risks associated with surface gas drainage. You are able to identify and analyse complex problems and make recommendations by engaging with team members and stakeholders close to the problem. You are able to effectively manage and deliver projects in line with targets; budget, schedule and resources. You are able to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and develop everyday in order to enable future growth.

Minimum statutory qualifications for this position include:


  • RIIRIS402E - Carry out the risk management process (G2) (required)
  • Supervisor Competencies (S1, S2, S3) RIIRIS301 + RIIWHS301 + RIICOM301 (required)
  • RIIMCU404E - Apply and monitor the gas drainage management plan (Required or higher equivalent)
  • RIIMCU603D - Establish and maintain the gas drainage management plan (highly desired or other relevant tertiary qualification)
